Mauritius Beer Research Institute

What is MBRI?
We are dedicated to research in the brewing industry for the advancement of the sector in Mauritius. The field of research includes raw materials as well as brewing techniques.
MBRI's mission is to find commercial applications to help sustain the local industry. For example, finding local sources of brewing raw materials to help reduce importation, stimulate local economy, reduce pollution, increase local autonomy in food supply and thus, champion circular economy.
Who is MBRI?
We are the research department of Flying Dodo Brewing Company, sharing our knowledge freely with both local and international stakeholders.
Achievements
Besides having introduced craft beer in Mauritius in 2012, which is today a burgeoning sector with 4 breweries, we are continuously searching local sources of starch and hop replacement.
Research has been done on Cassava, Lentils, Breadfruit, Moringa, Cucumber, Roselle, Lime, Mango, Oranges, Coffee Beans and Tulsi to name a few.
We have done extensive research on the cultivation, processing and fermentation of Cassava. Today, Flying Dodo Brewing Company is successfully selling a Cassava beer in its portfolio.
Our new project is the introduction of hops in Mauritius. We are working with Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Insitute FAREI for a safe naturalization in our local floral.
Partners
We source our materials from local growers such as Oranges from Les Palmiers Chez Dev , and Cassava from Biscuiterie Rault. We are also searching for land owners ready to help us grow specific materials.
Sharing of knowledge
Free publications will soon follow, as well as road shows and presentations. Currently, we are open to discussions and sharing.
